The opening round of the Super 8s saw the Red Devils slip out of the top four spots after suffering a 32-18 defeat at Hull FC.
Tries from Manu Vatuvei, Niall Evalds and Rob Lui were cancelled out by scores from Albert Kelly and Carlos Tuimavave alongside a Jake Connor penalty goal.
Vatuvei notched another after half-time but tries from Fetuli Talanoa, Jake Connor and a second from Tuimavave secured a Hull victory.
St Helens climbed above the Red Devils thanks to their impressive win over league leaders and favourites to win the Super League – Castleford.
Justin Holbrook’s side are the competition’s form team at the moment and were led to victory by hooker James Roby who grabbed a double. Tries from Zeb Taia and Jonny Lomax ensured victory after Adam Milner and Joel Monaghan had given Castleford hope.
Salford welcome the visit of Castleford next weekend and will be looking to earn their first victory since 2nd July. Saints host Hull FC on Friday night and could move into 3rd with victory over the Black and Whites. The Red Devils trail Saints in 4th spot by one point.
Wembley bound Wigan were brought back down to earth as a Stevie Ward hat-trick got Leeds’ Super 8s campaign off to the perfect start. Matt Parcell’s try and an Ashton Golding brace confirmed victory for the hosts. Youngster Tom Davies went over twice to level the scores while Sam Tomkins grabbed a late consolation.
The Red Devils face both the Warriors and Leeds away from home in the Super 8s. Ian Watson’s side travel to the DW Stadium the week prior to Wigan’s Challenge Cup final appearance before making the trip to Headingley in round six of the Super 8s.
In the final Super 8s game of the weekend Huddersfield earned a comfortable victory over Wakefield at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday night. The Giants had six different try-scorers with Danny Brough, Darnell McIntosh, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Leroy Cudjoe, Jermaine McGillvary and Daniel Smith all crossing for the hosts.
Sam Williams scored Wakefield’s only try as Huddersfield climbed into 7th closing the gap on Trinity to three points. The Red Devils will face Huddersfield and Wakefield in back-to-back home games on the 1st and 9th August.
