The Salford Red Devils are through to the next round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup following a bruising encounter against the Toronto Wolfpack.

Junior Sa’u and Todd Carney missed out for Salford through injury, with Ben Murdoch-Masila and Lee Mossop coming back into the side.

Toronto were boosted by the recent signing of Ryan Brierley who made his debut for the Canadians.

The first 10 minutes saw the game start on an even keel, but it was Kris Welham who would break the deadlock for Salford, scoring after a Dobson high kick.

Toronto hit back almost instantly with Liam Kay breaking the Salford line to score under the posts, and level the scores at 6-6.

With the momentum now with the Wolfpack, the visitors took to the lead from Quentin Laulu-Togagae finding some space to score.

Salford responded in good fashion and were soon level again, with Greg Johnson scoring in the corner and Dobson converting from the sideline to cancel out the Toronto lead.

The game swung yet again and debutant Ryan Brierley dived over the Wolfpack to restore the lead, with Justin Carney being shown a red card for dissent.

The Red Devils managed to claw the lead back before half time, Greg Johnson scoring his second of the match after a flowing Salford move, and Dobson adding the two points to make the game 18-16 after a pulsating first half.

Salford started the second half on the front foot, with Kris Welham displaying some fantastic enterprise to deal with a high kick and bat the ball on to Michael Dobson to extend the Red Devils lead.

The Wolfpack dug their heels deep and did well to keep themselves in the game, which opened up into a physical affair with tempers running high at times, but the Red Devils eventually pushed themselves out to a 12 point lead with 20 minutes remaining when Gareth O’Brien darted through the defence to make the score 28-16 with the conversion.

O’Brien then added a drop goal to give the Red Devils a three score advantage and put Salford on course for the next round of the cup.

Toronto did score a consolation try on the hooter with FuiFui MoiMoi crashing over, but it was to be the Red Devils afternoon, closing out a 29-22 win.

Attentions now turn back to the Betfred Super League and the visit of Widnes Vikings next Sunday.

The draw for the next round of the cup takes place on Tuesday night.
